David Crowder*Band Announces Next Album Will Be Its Last

23 May

The David Crowder*Band has announced that its upcoming album and tour will be its last collectively.

For me, I have to accept this news with mixed emotions. I am a bit sad as, for the past decade, I have been blessed by this band’s music. I believe the David Crowder*Band consists of some of the most innovative, creative, God-loving, people-loving minds on the planet. (Check out this YouTube video for a glimpse of their handiwork!) To think they will leave us with a mere collection of six albums seems inconceivable. I know there is much more that has yet to be mined in the hearts and heads of these amazing artists.

That as-yet-untitled sixth album is currently in the works, and the band will tour to promote its release. The David Crowder* Band’s last full outing, The 7 Tour, is scheduled to hit the road for three months, and the line-up is stellar. In addition to DC*B, the tour will feature Gungor, John Mark McMillan, and Chris August. In addition, it has been promised that the David Crowder*Band will make one final appearance at Passion 2012 in Atlanta next January.

As to the significance of The 7 Tour’s name, the band explained in its announcement, “We’ve always hidden this little number here and there in our music and artwork, sometimes it would appear in the sum of the numerals 3 and 4, and other times it would be sitting there outright, but it’s always been with us. As you know, the number 7 has often been used to represent completion, and that feels exactly where we are as a band.”

And, this is where I have to admit that there is much to be excited about with this announcement. In addition to being a fan, I have had the wonderful opportunity to interview these guys on numerous occasions. Wherever they end up individually, I am sure it will be because God directed them there. You can never be sad because someone is following God’s perfect will and direction in their lives.

As the band further explained, “None of us is sure what’s next, but we’re not afraid. We’re, in fact, really, really excited! And we’re sure that music will play a role in the future for most, if not all, of us, since, well, we wouldn’t know how to not have it a part of our lives. To what extent that will be, none of us is sure. We are hopeful and expecting, and praying that what is ahead of us deepens our need and experience of redemption and multiplies our ability and effectiveness in expressing the story of God in light of the call he has on each of our lives.”

In their inimitable, humble style, the band has expressed its gratitude for the support of their local and extended church communities and continues to ask for prayer as it moves forward.

“We’d love your prayers as we endeavor to put a period at the end of this sentence…We would love for you to join us for one last evening together, singing these songs that God has allowed us to carry.”

I cannot conceive of a period being put to the end of the David Crowder*Band sentence just yet. I prefer to view it as a semi-colon heading into future clauses for each member, each continuing to craft from the original message in his own unique way.

I look forward with anticipation to see where God leads these men. In the meantime, I may have to indulge in two or three visits to The 7 Tour. I strongly suggest each of you do the same. It is sure to be an experience not to be missed.

Paul Colman Trio Reunites

26 Jan

For long-time Paul Colman Trio fans, some exciting news is on the horizon. PC3, consisting of original members Paul Colman, Grant Norsworthy, and Phil Gaudion, is working on a new record and planning a tour of Australia and New Zealand in April 2011.

To concur with Colman’s feelings, as expressed in a message to all his Facebook friends:

“Very good times indeed!!!!!!!”

Inspired by the success of a “reunion” appearance in April 2009 at Australia’s Easterfest, the Melbourne natives gave serious consideration to ending the “break” the band took in 2004 for personal and professional reasons.

Despite radio hits like “Turn” and “Run”, a first-year Grammy nomination, and a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 2003, the Paul Colman Trio struggled with finding success in the American music market.

But that was then; this is now.

In January 2011, as the new year unfolded, so did a new chapter in the story of the Paul Colman Trio. Returning to the studio with fresh music and a fresh mindset, the group enlisted the assistance of guitar legend Adam Lester and went to work.

The first single off the new record, “I Don’t Know Why” is currently in rough mix through the wonders of technology as Paul tours Europe, Grant remains in the United States, and Phil is still in Australia. While a US release date is not currently on the radar, Australian and New Zealand radio stations should be spinning “I Don’t Know Why” next week.

“Official” tour dates for Australia and New Zealand have not been released, although the band has confirmed that they will return to Easterfest in Toowoomba, Queensland, and Paul has “leaked” April 18 as the date for a performance in Perth. Other locations still being negotiated: Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, and Launceston.

PC3 has created a Facebook page, and the conversation there is already buzzing with excitement from PC3’s Serious Fans who have patiently waited for this moment for more than seven years.

And, what about US dates? Unfortunately, a US tour is not being considered – yet.

In response to one of many US inquiries on the band‘s new Facebook page, PC3 left this response: “We’d love to, but for PC3 to tour the USA, the desire from US fans to have us tour would need to make itself blindingly obvious.”

Okay, Serious Fans, we’ve been living on great memories far too long. It’s time to light those candles in the windows and bring the Paul Colman Trio back to America.

Rebecca St. James Engaged!

3 Jan st james and fink

The wait is over.

Rebecca St. James became engaged to Jacob Fink at her family’s farm in Franklin, TN. Fink requested Rebecca’s parents’ blessing before popping the question on Christmas Day.

Fink, a Colorado native who now calls southern California home, is pursuing a career in music. The couple met through mutual friends in Los Angeles. Before delving into music, Fink served as a missionary in South Africa for two years before heading to college, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in communications and an emphasis on film production.

St. James sent this message out to family and friends: “We are truly amazed at finding our dreams and ideals met in the love we’ve found. We are exceedingly grateful for this precious gift from God.”

St. James may be best known for her signature song, “Wait For Me,” as well as for her books and speaking engagements on the subject of purity before marriage.

The Grammy Award winner will be a busy lady in 2011. In addition to planning her upcoming nuptials, St. James releases a new studio album:  I Will Praise You on April 5. This is her first release on Beach Street/Reunion Records, home to Christian music supergroup Casting Crowns. Her first single off the new record, “Shine Your Glory Down” will hit radio on February 11. In September, St. James will release her ninth book, What Is He Thinking?, published by Hacheete/Faithwords.

Information on St. James, her upcoming releases, and personal appearances can be found at http://www.facebook.com/RSJames.

Chris Tomlin Opens Passion 2011

2 Jan

Passion 2011 got started on January 1 in Atlanta with Chris Tomlin leading worship and introducing a stash of new music.

Passion 2011 is the most recent edition of the Passion Conferences, created by author and speaker Louis Giglio. The music, message and mission of Passion are geared for a college-aged audience.

As Tomlin leads a capacity crowd at Atlanta’s Philips Arena – with an overflow crowd of 6,000 at nearby Georgia World Congress Center, the opening night overwhelmed the senses by the sheer energy and volume alone.

As in past Passion Conferences, Tomlin has written new songs for Passion 2011. The theme for the four-day event seems to be summed up in the recently penned, “We welcome You with praise.” With this anthem, Tomlin has tapped into the heartbeat of a generation seeking a meaningful relationship with a God who actively pursues them.

The music carries familiar rhythms and beats. Afterall, Tomlin is one of the most prolific modern worship songwriters. Each Sunday, Tomlin-penned songs are sung in churches, not only across the country but around the world.

It is the response of the crowd, combined with Tomlin’s humble nature, however, that makes Passion 2011 a worship experience rather than a mere concert. Tomlin is not a performer, and that fact is no more evident than at Passion conferences.

Tomlin may physically take center stage but he inexplicably manages to wrangle a choir of 22,000 into the intimate feeling of a local church gathering. Tomlin, in fact, seems as energized by the crowd as the crowd is energized by him.

It’s a surreal moment when Matt Redman and the worship band from Georgia World Congress Center are closed-circuit fed back to Philips Arena for a worship song. Tomlin, Kristian Stanfill, Christie Nockels, and the rest of Tomlin’s worship band, laid down their instruments, faced the screens along with the audience, and worshipped alongside the Philips Arena crowd.

After a stirring message by Passion founder Louie Giglio on God’s ability to love us, use us, and free us despite whatever circumstance, Tomlin returns for another brief set. As Tomlin calls for “a mighty shout to happen in this house,” the man who is the author of so many modern worship songs releases another great anthem in “Set Free,” sure to soon grace church Jumbotrons.

Passion 2011 is just getting started, and so it seems is Tomlin. Can’t wait to hear what he unleashes tomorrow.

Day One of Passion 2011 produced a historic worship experience. Catch Day Two on the Generation 268 website, which is streaming each day’s events live and for 24 hours thereafter.

Third Day’s Move is a Winner

22 Oct

On October 19, Third Day released Move, their 11th studio album. The new release has a familiar feel. The quartet from Georgia returns to the classic southern rock sounds of early Third Day albums.

For Christian radio listeners, or those who tuned in to the Alabama-Penn State game on Saturday, September 11, you’ve already heard “Lift Up Your Face” the powerful first single from what’s sure to be another award-winning offering.

Recorded in the band’s new Atlanta-based studio, The Quarry, Move was a labor of love that began while the band was touring last year. Its impending release has got even a music veteran like lead singer Mac Powell excited.

“I’m really partial to this record,” says Powell. “These songs were meant to encourage. I know they encouraged us, so I’m excited to see the response from our fans.”

“Lift Up Your Face” lays the instantly recognizable rugged vocal talents of Powell in front of the smooth harmonies of the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama. It’s an inspired coupling.

While “Lift Up Your Face” immediately sets Move in motion, the momentum continues to pick up steam as the next track releases bassist Tai Anderson’s heavy-handed introduction on “Make Your Move.”

Anderson explained the band’s mindset during recording.

“We wanted to write songs specifically designed for live events. Sure, we put them on a record, but these are songs that we want to really resonate with fans at live performances.”

The band proved their point during this year’s Night of Joy at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, when they previewed several selections for the crowd in front of Cinderella’s Castle.

Full of strong anthems and powerful ballads, Move comes alive with Powell’s immense vocal, and physical, on-stage energy. Backed by the incredible instrumental performances of Third Day members Anderson, guitarist Mark Lee, and drummer David Carr, and accompanied by musicians extraordinaire Scotty Wilbanks and Jason Hoard, the band unleashes a live stage show that becomes more interactive worship event than performance concert.

As Powell leads the audience in “Children of God,” the compelling repetition of the bridge immediately engages the audiences, even those members hearing the song for the first time.

While there is nothing quite like a live Third Day performance, the Move CD captures the honesty and depth as closely as any recording can.

The prayerful styling of “Trust in Jesus” and the pensive “What Have You Got to Lose” beg personal introspection.

The closing track “Don’t Give Up Hope” ends the record with a plea for perseverance. It’s as if the band is saying, we’re in the same boat you are, we’re struggling just as you are, keep the faith. It’s the perfect ending to an amazing record.

Third Day is currently on the Making A Difference Tour, featuring tobyMac, Michael W. Smith, Jason Gray, and best-selling author Max Lucado. Check the Third Day website for a venue near you.

Review: Casting Crowns’ Until the Whole World Hears…Live

31 Aug

If you love the music of Casting Crowns’ spring release, Until the Whole World Hears, you’re going to love the live CD/DVD combo package set out today.

Until the Whole World Hears…Live includes an audio disc featuring eight of the original 12 offerings performed live.

The DVD provides a video scrapbook of the band on tour to promote the original CD release. Footage was shot at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina, the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina, and the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

As anyone who’s ever attending a Casting Crowns concert knows, the production is always top notch, and this tour is no exception. There are powerful renditions by both Mark Hall and keyboardist Megan Garrett, and Hall characteristically relates some great stories from stage.

The real treasures, though, are the special features.

Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the madness and mayhem that go on during the band’s “down time” in the clips “Laser Tag” and “Cornhole.” “Our New Drummer” introduces Brian Scoggin. There’s a segment devoted to the folks who pull off the production of a Crowns’ experience, aptly titled “The Crew.”

A poignant piece chronicles the 3 ½ year journey of the Hall family as they sought to adopt their fourth child, Meeka Hope.

At the top of the menu sits the music video for “Until the Whole World Hears,” certainly a highlight of the package.

Filmed atop a 20-story building in Birmingham, Alabama, it’s powerful and affecting– especially as throngs of people answer the call to “sing until the whole world hears.” The ending of the song, originally recorded in Hall’s home church of Eagles Landing First Baptist in McDonough, Georgia, during a regular Sunday morning service, gets special treatment in the video.

The band solicited churches and youth groups to send in videos of people singing the song’s concluding lines. The response was overwhelming, and a varied selection made it into the final cut. While there are several American participants, groups from Kenya, Singapore, Guatemala, and Brazil are included as well.

“Check out the group from Israel,” lead singer Mark Hall told his students on a recent Wednesday night when he uncharacteristically previewed the new video. “Look behind them. You can see the Dome of the Rock in the distance. Way cool.”

Hall typically does not sing Crowns music at the church, however. This is not where he performs, but, as most fans know already, this is most definitely where his songs are birthed.

“We’re really still a youth praise band,” Hall says nearly eight years after they exploded onto the Christian music scene. “All our songs come from this place. They are a reflection of what we see going on here in the church.”

In the case of “Until the Whole World Hears,” Hall’s stimulus came from his mentor Roger Glidewell, the executive director of The Institute for Global Youth Studies in north Georgia. For years, in his letters and emails, Glidewell always closed with that instructional phrase and the citation for Matthew 24:14. Hall and his co-writers spun that simple line into an anthem currently being sung, literally, around the world.

The life lessons and experiences Hall has walked through with his students not only influence his songs, but his sermons. A true “bonus” feature of the DVD is a special five-part teaching series where Hall delves into the Scriptures that support his life views. It’s a transparency shared by his bandmates, all youth workers as well, and their love for God ignites the emotional performances of this live set.
